BREAKING: Sowell Play Hits $100,000

My solo play is now one of the hottest campaigns on IndieGogo.

I am so humbled.

And so honored.

After 30 days the Sowell play campaign has smashed the original goal by over 1000%.

With nearly 800 backers, the project has now raised over $100,000.

At a time when America’s theatre industry is still limping along from self-inflicted wounds, the success of the Sowell campaign sends a signal that there’s a big audience out there that is eager to invest in the arts.

This morning I was reading A Personal Odyssey, a sensitively-written collection of chronological vignettes that serve as Thomas Sowell’s memoir. As I read about Sowell’s bittersweet boyhood, I was struck by the overlap in experiences between his youth and my own. I instinctually began trying to experience the text more through my heart than through my eyes, and to place myself in his skin.

In other words:

I’m already working.

I’m already becoming Thomas Sowell.

Eventually I put the book down, filled with something I’ve not felt in years:

Inspiration.

I thought to myself what a gift to be given the opportunity to explore such a wonderful character.

Then I checked the fundraiser page, and tears began burning in my sleep-hungry eyes.

When I went to bed the night before, the total was around $92,000.

Nothing to sneeze at.

But overnight, the total jumped to $99,300.

I sent a screencap of the total to my line producer, Craig, with the message:

We’re going to hit 100K

I can’t believe it

Then today, at around 15:00 Eastern Standard Time, the threshold was crossed:

One hundred-thousand, one hundred fifty-five dollars. Incredible.

“I always have anxiety at the beginning of a new project.”

The legendary Rick Rubin said that—so I feel a little better about myself.

But at the same time, I look forward to the future for the first time since 2020.

This will be an incredibly transformative journey for all of us.
